World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – Standing Up for Our Seniors by Jane Pocock (Practice Manager)

23 June 2025

15th June marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a time for communities around the world to come together and shed light on the mistreatment many older adults face—often behind closed doors. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 6 people over the age of 60 experience some form of abuse each year.
Elder abuse can include physical harm, emotional distress, neglect, or even financial exploitation. Sadly, many seniors suffer in silence due to fear, isolation, or being dependent on their abuser.
This awareness day encourages all of us—families, neighbours, caregivers, and community members—to recognize the signs and speak up. Look for unexplained injuries, withdrawal from social activities, poor hygiene, or sudden financial problems.
Our seniors deserve to feel safe, valued, and respected. By raising awareness and showing we care, we can help protect the well-being of older adults in our community.
If something doesn’t seem right, it’s okay to ask questions or reach out to local support services.
If you are someone who is feeling the effects of elder abuse, please speak to your doctor or one of the nurses, when you come in for your doctor’s appointment.
You can book an appointment at Baywest Medical Centre by calling 3396 5309.
